My Addictions (Part 2)

As I stated in my last blogpost, my other big addiction is social media. Yes, it's a real thing.  Because of my addiction to social media I have started asking myself a few questions:

1. What have my priorities been? i.e. What am I spending the majority of my time on?

2. What do I WANT to be doing (not just right now, but in a year, 3 years, 5 years, etc) ?

3. What can I do today to get me to my goals as stated in 2?

Question one allows me to look objectively at what I currently spend my time on.  What we choose to spend our time on are those things we have prioritized.  I realized that too much of my time has been taken up with social media.  It's a vacuum.  I may decide to check Facebook Marketplace for an item I'm looking to buy, next thing I know two hours have gone by while I've been watching cute puppy videos. And, while Twitter and Instagram are slightly less a time-suck for me, I still find myself getting caught up reading tweets and responses, following links to videos, trying to find a way to narrow down what I want to say to a few words etc, etc, etc.

Question two gives me the opportunity to think about long-term goals. What do I want to be doing in 3-5 years? 10 years? I revisit this list every few weeks because it helps me to focus on where I want to go.

Question three helps me to focus on accomplishing my goals. For example, one of my goals is to pay off all our debt.  I ask myself what I can do today to help get us out of debt. One thing I can do is to be conscious of every bit of money I spend, so I ask myself, "Would I rather buy this item or would I rather put the money this item costs toward a credit card payment?"  It's actually been a very helpful process.

I first went through these questions a month ago and managed to stay on track for a bit, but a month later I revisited the questions and realized I had slipped back into my habit of allowing social media to suck my time away.  For now, I am going to have to revisit these questions every week.  Hopefully, with time,  I will not have to remind myself so often in order to stay on track.

In the meantime, I will start a timer every time I log into one of my social medial accounts. This way time will not get away from me while I surf and I will prioritize what needs to be prioritized.

What are your goals? What have you been prioritizing? What will you prioritize in the future?  Please respond with your comments and questions.

Til next time.
